THE CURMUDGEON CHRONICLE - THANKSGIVING MESSAGE (2007)

Thanksgiving Message

It is not outré or quirky
To stand firm for an ideal:
I protest making the turkey
Into a symbolic, festive meal.

The roast of beef, the leg of lamb,
The fatted calf and veal so tender;
The loin of pork and the honeyed ham
Should provide enough provender.

The turkey is a miracle not a bird:
It doesn’t sing it only gobbles;
It tries not to seem absurd,
But it can’t walk, it only wobbles.

Eating this bird is to global warming
As ethanol is to salt-beef jerky
Ethanol keeps honey bees swarming
As jerky eaten, protects the turkey

Having said the proper thing
I have my plate this special night
Waiting for Madame to bring
My turkey dinner (dark and white).

Envoi
Sorry Tom, I really tried
To save you from the holiday plate:
I must confess (though not with pride)
Thanksgiving dinner is your fate.
