Last night was not restful in Hell. The likes of Eastland, Wallace and Thurmond, rolled and tossed, and the deceased Kleagle of the Klan did double duty at the furnaces. The Devil had lost, big time because….

Barack Obama was chosen to represent the Democrats in the upcoming election. The acclaim of thousands in Denver and millions watching television at home proves that this country is capable of doing the proper thing despite those who try to deny the rights granted by our Constitution.

Which Party wins in November does matter, but not as much as the fact that in the United States, everything good and decent can happen.

We remember (or have learned of) the years when the rule was exclusion and second class citizenship for those who were not WASP enough to enter the halls of power. We watched the Irish, Italians, and other immigrant groups claw their way to this country’s table through political skill and hard work, and the Jews of Eastern Europe get their place at the table as well (though not a room at the Inn) by perseverance and grit,

None of those achievements compare with what Obama accomplished in the past months. He has laid to rest clichés about race; demonstrated intelligence, fortitude, measured responses, and powers of concentration and evaluation. He is living proof that skin color does not control intellect, or anything other than the need for a tanning salon. He is proof that when this country provides education for brilliant minds of all backgrounds and types, the benefits we harvest are enormous. .

I don’t know if Mr. Obama will be elected to serve as President, but regardless of that, we can be proud as Americans that we fostered the possibility of his election.

Last night was the time when ….’regardless of race, creed or national origin…” made sense. There were many tears of joy at the Convention and millions more in homes across the country, mine included.
